The Modern Pantry

  • Our role: lead architect / concept design / detailed design / technical drawing packages / tender / tender appraisal / management of construction phases

Comprising upstairs and downstairs restaurant space as well as a shop/pantry, The Modern Pantry is neatly ensconced in two elegant Georgian buildings on St. John's Square in Clerkenwell, London. The Grade II-listed buildings were close to derelict when our client, chef Anna Hansen, first came across them.

Working with a listed building meant a sense of tradition and heritage was already there; the challenge was to introduce a modern feel to the Georgian palette. The style is contemporary with a homely, almost folksy vibe, designed to create a link between Anna's approach to cooking and the restaurant itself; to reconnect people with familiar ingredients but in new and interesting ways.

We collaborated with Nicholas Alexander to produce furniture of our own design, including one long, rustic-style table with turned legs, accompanied by Cherish chairs by Horm. London-based studio Hyperkit provided the graphic identity, including cooking utensil motifs which were engraved on table tops.
